I thought residents may be interested to see works in front of the Hat and Feathers just after the turn of last century. It's from the London Metropolitan Archives
The image was used in 'Finsbury: Now and Then', a teacher's pack covering different themes and topics.
The photograph is dated c1906 and is accompanied by the following caption:
By the late 19th century, horse-drawn traffic was causing chaos on the streets. In 1906, the London County Council took over the running of the tram companies and electrified the routes. This photograph shows the laying of metal tramlines in the road for the new, heavy tram cars. The power supply was laid in a conduit buried in the road between the rails.
Just a little taster of the rich local history of this area uncovered during research by the City of London and Cripplegate Photographic Society while working on a project in conjunction with the Museum if Islington to photograph the areas of Cripplegate / Clerkenwell and Finsbury
