The Jewish Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943 was the first act of large-scale urban armed resistance to Nazi rule in Europe. For over a month, several hundred poorly armed Jewish fighters, were able to resist the Nazis. The Jewish fighters and the ghetto inhabitants knew that victory was impossible, but as one of its leaders, Marek Edelman, noted, “the inspiration to fight was not to allow the Germans alone to pick the time and place of our deaths”. To commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day this meeting will pay homage to this heroic struggle.

Speaker: Dr Martin Smith (Warsaw University Holocaust Studies Unit)
