Why 1 March needs to be a date in your diary and money, time and energy are required now

1 March is looming as a very important date for Golden Lane Estate.

Richard Cloudesley site

Islington Planning Committee will be meeting at 7-30pm to hear the planning application for the Richard Cloudesley site. Some changes have been made to the plans under pressure from GLE but there is still much that remains which is a huge cause for concern. Key issues include a tower…

Alternative plans for CoLPAI by Fred Scott

This is a collage of 1950’s local Londoners looking at a model of my future proposal for the Richard Cloudesley / COLPAI site on the north east side of the Golden Lane Estate. It is a sketch model, a general arrangement.

The primary aim is to extend the principles of the existing layout,…

As Bernard Morgan House finally demolished government figures show City of London is as bad as the Isles of Scilly in building affordable homes

As the last piece of Bernard Morgan House is demolished and carted away, figures published this week by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government show that the City of London was in the bottom five local authorities when it comes…

Conflicts of interest - do they matter in EC1?

In most places of employment, there is an obligation to register potential conflicts of interest.  A freelance job perhaps or membership of a rival organisation - all of these make it necessary either to declare an interest or to step down from a decision. But is this the way it works in the City of London?

Like many on Golden Lane Estate, I…

RCS CoLPAI - alternative plans

Is it possible to achieve the same amount of school and housing accommodation on the RCS site in a low to medium rise format that matches the surrounding housing?

The RSC CoLPAI GLERA sub-committee have looked at possible plans in more detail and it turns out that not only is it possible; you could achieve 15% more social housing on the site. The key is to combine the school and housing in one building which saves space. This layout would:

  • Be planning…

A new chance to create something really good and useful on the Richard Cloudesley site

GLERA has been opposing plans from the City of London and Islington for the development of a sixty-six apartment tower block and a two-form entry primary school on the site currently occupied by Richard Cloudesley School. Thanks to the recent submission of a new planning application by the two local authorities, there is now a three-week opportunity to comment on the proposals and suggest alternatives. GLERA urges residents to support the alternative proposals.

The new deadline is…

Common councillor meeting in Cripplegate - conflicts of interest, participation in the planning process, culture mile

This week one of the regular meetings between Common Councillors, our Alderman and residents took place.

This was an unusual meeting as it started with a presentation by Sir Nicholas Kenyon, managing director of the Barbican Centre on the Culture Mile.  This is a joint initiative between local arts venues and the City of London.  It envisages over a period of perhaps…

Senior estate officer

Hello folks,

My primary train of thought at present is how best to develope the use of the community centre for the best use of the residents of this estate. In the relatively short time that I have been here it has struck me that there is a wealth of knowledge and experience held within this community. It seems to me that there are a great deal of untapped resorces, that if organised with commitment could develope this estate into something rather extraordinary!
