Event Description

Immigrant artists’ responses to this strange new continent were initially seen through European, and especially British, artistic traditions, but as the 19th century progressed they found their own artistic language through which to respond to the unique landscape and culture Down Under. Images of the pioneer or the sheepshearer would become Australian icons.

In the twentieth century many Australian artists achieved international recognition, and indigenous artists painted responses to contemporary life while retaining links to ancestral traditions. Art Down Under continues to flourish in the 21st century.

Free illustrated talk with Arts Society lecturer Val Woodgate.
