Egyptian tomb decorations, Christian symbols, hunters and the hunted, birds appear in art in many guises. The Dove of the Holy Spirit becomes a symbol of Peace for Picasso; for Rubens and others, the peacock is an attribute of the goddess Juno, and the eagle one of several alter egos for her husband Jupiter. The graceful swan, a Surrealist mystery for Dali, is Jupiter, again in disguise, for artists as varied as Veronese and Matisse.
