Did you know???

Redrow, the developers of the former YMCA in Fann Street, will hold a public exhibition on proposals for the re-development of the site from

4pm - 9pm, Tuesday 3rd December at St Giles.

With development scheduled to commence in January 2015, it's a potentially good opportunity to get us off to a good start in approaching this particular re-development and draw together key partners - the City, the developer, the BA, RCC and Residents in Crescent house and others on the Golden Lane Estate.

I think it disgusting that this building has been given to private developers obviosly with the support of COL to do what they like . Were are these people from English Heretage that have delayed the upgrade of great arthur house for several years leaving tenents living in conditions that fail Decent homes standards that should have been completed by Law in 2010 to make sure the building looks identical ? Not only that they are only going to get a flippin roof garden too !!!

Yes, Barbican Talk has a long running thread about the Y.

For those interested, there is a thread on Barbican Talk about no social housing being included in this development......it makes for very interesting reading!!!

Ditto.  We really do need more social housing in this city.

I lived at the Y for three years, many years ago (mostly on 15th floor with fabulous west-facing views, but I also spent a bit of time on 16th facing east and boy was it cold), so I know the layout quite well.  The plans set out a major change to the internal layout of all the residential floors (can't see what the proposals are for the - once communal - floors up to the third floor, shops? gym?) but this huge internal layout change is striking considering this is a listed building.

Furthermore, I am somewhat dismayed, to say the least, at the proposal to fling a random collection of glass boxes on the roof.  I can't see how this is in keeping with its listed status.  Do we really need another glass box of flats in London?  One assumes  (I couldn't make the one off opportunity to see it in person so have to rely on the online info) this will become the penthouse suite(s), no doubt commanding a huge premium for the developer.  This excrescence will detract, not enhance, the block, being incongruous to the rest of the building as it's in no way sympathetic to the original design in silhouette or treatment (profile/materials).  Oh, and the metal windows leaked like nobody's business, so they'll get changed too I imagine.

It really is about time the Corp got its act together and replaced all the windows on GLE.  It is shameful that they have let it drag on for so long.
