It's obviously important not to alarm people unnecessarily but at the same time we need to ensure that people are safe. The terrible events of this week have shocked and saddened us all. Whilst I welcome a public enquiry, it is not realistic to wait for the report before anything is done. As an elected representative for Cripplegate ward which has two tower blocks (Cromwell and Great Arthjur) and two more planned (Bernard Morgan House and Richard Cloudesley - just over the boundary with Islington) I have some thoughts of my own on what is needed but am more interested in hearing your views. Please let me know what actions you consider essential in both the short and long term. I'm a member of Port Health and Environmental Services Committee, the Community and Children's Services Committee and the Housing Management Sub Committee - all of which have an interest in these matters. I am willing to ask questions and find out information in my role as a member of these committees. Please write to me at mary.durcan@cityoflondon.gov.uk or contribute to this discussion post.
Thank you.
Mary Durcan
Common Councillor

Thanks Christo.
This is the sort of information only someone living in the various flats would know. I realise that it's difficult to compel leaseholders to comply with any changes but I would hope that most people would be willing to keep themselves and their neighbours safe. In the end it may require legislation. Plenty to think about. We also need some action.
Many thanks
Mary
To quote our Alderman, David Graves:
The insulating material being used at GAH is called Fixrock 035LB which, encouragingly, is a mineral based product in the (safest, non-combustible) A1 category under European Standard EN 13501 - 1. The standard is explained in the document via the link below:
https://www.peroni.com/lang_UK/_downloa ... cation.pdf
Clearly, one needs to assess the fire resilience of the complete system, but it is good to learn that the insulation material used in the refurbishment of GAH is not of the flammable variety.
The City Corporation is re-examining fire safety and fire procedures for its housing stock and I am also confident that the issue will be discussed at the next meeting of the City Corporation's Housing Management Sub-Committee.
